When a STOP sign is knocked down, a barricade is needed, or your crew discovers you are short on material, you do not want to leave three messages and wait two days for an answer. • Do they actually have material in stock? A low price does not help much if the product will not arrive for six weeks. • Are you planning ahead when possible? Not every emergency can be avoided. But many last-minute orders can. Planning seasonal purchases, sign replacements, paving materials, snow equipment and regular inventory ahead of time gives your supplier a better chance to have everything ready when your crews need it. A little planning can save a lot of headaches.

• Are you telling your supplier what you really need? The more information we have, the better we can help: Tell us about the job, tell us what problem you are trying to solve, tell us your budget, tell us your deadline. Sometimes there is a different product or solution that can save your department time or money.

• Are you open to new ideas? Municipal products and traffic safety technology continue to change. Solar-powered signs, RRFB pedestrian systems, in-road warning lights, improved sign materials and new roadway safety products may provide better solutions than what was used twenty years ago. A good supplier should keep you informed without trying to sell you something you do not need.
