Don’t Miss this Funding Opportunity for RRFBs & IRWLs!

The deadline is approaching for Federal Department of Transportation grants for the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program—applications must be received by midnight on June 26. Glenco’s RRFB Solar Powered Signs and In-Road Warning Lights (IRWL) qualify for the funding and are excellent ways to access the grants and enhance pedestrian and roadway safety.

RRFBs and IRWLs are flashing, high visibility traffic control devices designed to increase driver awareness of pedestrians crossing at mid-block crossings and uncontrolled intersections.

RRFBs include two rectangular-shaped yellow indicators, each with an LED-array-based light source that flashes with high frequency when activated. The flashing is programmed for maximum attention enhancement—the so-called “wig-wag” pattern, which alternates to increase visibility and driver awareness.   They deliver a safer, greener, cost -effective “share-the-road” solution.

IRWLs are in-pavement LED lighted crosswalks that create a barrier of bright flashing lights directly in drivers’ sight lines. They deliver 3000-foot daytime visibility, offer passive or active operation, are self-cleaning, and require minimum maintenance. These systems have been shown to reduce pedestrian crashes by nearly 50%, and increase motorist yield rates by 98%.

The Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program is a federal initiative by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) aimed at enhancing roadway safety across the nation.  Established under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), the program allocates $5 billion over five years (2022–2026) to support local, regional, and Tribal efforts in reducing roadway fatalities and serious injuries through a comprehensive safety approach.  SS4A’s primary goal is to prevent deaths and serious injuries on US roadways by funding initiatives that promote safer people, roads, vehicles, appropriate speeds, and improved post-crash care. The program supports the development and implementation of comprehensive safety action plans that identify significant roadway safety concerns and outline strategies to address them  Learn more here: Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Grant Program.
